When to Hold 'Em...When to Fold 'Em

Kenny Rogers had a hit song out many years ago titled, "The Gambler". I'm not sure how or why I know some of the lyrics to this song, but I do. *smile*

The main verse of the song states, "You've got to know when to hold 'em. Know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away. Know when to run." When you really think about those words, it's so much truth in that. There are times when I have wanted to hold onto a particular person, job or situation that I didn't know at the time I was suppose to "fold". That person seemed like they were good to have around to be apart of my life, that job seemed like it was heaven sent at the time and those situations, I know they taught me some valuable lessons. But guess what? I needed to fold 'em. They should have been folded sooner then I did but when I did, I'm glad they are folded and no longer apart of my life.

Don't get me wrong, there have been people, things and situations that I thought should have been folded and I learned that those were worth holding onto. They have helped me to mature into the woman I am today, they have helped me learn more about myself and they have been some awesome lessons that came out of them. I'm still learning and I'm still hold 'em. God knows what we can handle and what we really need. Even when we don't - He does.

I remember the story of Lot in the bible when God spoke to him and told him to leave Sodom and Gomorrah because He was going to destroy the city. (Genesis 19) Lot was reluctant as I know that I can be at times when The Lord speaks, but Lot did listen. He took God at His word and got his family out of the city. We just have to learn how to trust God at His every word. We shouldn't be like Lot's wife who looked back at the city as it was being destroyed and turned into a pillar of salt and died. She died when she looked back because she disobeyed His voice when God told them not to. God doesn't want us to die or put ourselves in compromising situations just because we don't know when to fold 'em.

Another great story in the bible is about Noah. (Genesis chapter 5 - chapter 10)  Noah knew when to walk away, he knew when to get his family together and start building the ark that God told him to do. He knew that it had not rained in years and the idea of God sending rain to destroy the earth was a bit troubling, but Noah knew he had to do it. He knew when to walk away from all of the other people that were destroying God's land and not living according to God's word.

There are numerous stories that I could give you from the bible and even from my own life lessons. We all live and learn - daily. We just have to learn from each and every situation that we go through. Some of those things and people will make us laugh, smile, cry, feel hurt and even anger. But just remember that they are lessons that have to be taught.

Let's not be a gambler with our lives. We only have this one life to live here on earth, let's make it a great one. "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away and when to run." It's not always easy, but I know we can do it!!

Praise Your Own Pond!

Who are you praising? I'm a firm believer that you praise individuals who are deserving and who earn the praises. Praise is defined as the act of expressing approval or admiration. Everyone likes to be praised for the good things they accomplish. Whether it's a child that did good on a report card, a teen passing their driving test, that man proposing to his girlfriend, a marriage, graduation...I can go on an on. All of these things listed are worth praises. Do we praise people for the "good" that they do or do we sit and spew hate or negativity towards them? There's a saying that states, "It's a poor frog who doesn't praise its own pond", I agree. Why wouldn't you praise yourself for your own accomplishments? If you can't praise yourself for the "little" or "big" things that mean a lot to you, that means you can't genuinely praise anyone else for theirs. You have to start with yourself first. Even if it's a ...

Shake it like a Polaroid Picture

Last Christmas I was gifted with a Polaroid Camera that I requested. I use to admire the Polaroid Camera's when I was a kid; I never had one but I always wanted one. To finally have my own personal Polaroid, it was nostalgia. I started making plans for all of the candid pictures I would take with my new camera and since it was Christmas, I was looking forward to all of the instant pictures I would have on that day. I have used my Polaroid a lot since Christmas; I even had to get more film. The best part of having my Polaroid Camera is watching the picture come out and watching it develop right before my eyes. The anticipation of what the picture is going to look like; is it too dark, too light or did it develop just right? Making sure the camera's settings are correct before taking the pictures make a big difference. Sometimes the pictures can develop too dark or too light; both make it hard to see the image. Having messed up a lot of pictures due to the wrong setting can be ...

"Easy[Like Sunday Morning]"

I've been thinking about this song a lot lately and wondering what was Lionel Richie thinking when he penned this tune. Did Lionel Richie attend church on Sunday mornings?! Some of my Sunday morning's aren't easy at all. Lol! They are filled with trying to decide what to wear to church, how I'm going to do my hair, how my hair is going to turn out, if I'm going to like how I'm going to even look for church, do I want to attend the 8am or 11am service, etc.  Although some of my Sunday mornings aren't "easy", I don't allow the uneasiness to hinder me from attending church. The bible says in Hebrews 10:25 for Believers (Christians) to not skip church services and to encourage other Believers to attend church services as well. We are to surround ourselves with one another because we can uplift and empower each other. We get our teachings and motivations from listening to God's Word; listening to and applying His Word not only makes our Sunday...
